About Kakadu National Park

Kakadu is Australia's largest terrestrial national park. It covers an area about half the size of Switzerland. The park protects 2,000 plant species and one-fifth of Australia's mammals.

Aboriginal people have lived here for over 65,000 years. The park is a dual-listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognized for both its natural environment and deep cultural significance. Read more about the Jabiru & East Alligator.

Visitors come to see ancient X-ray rock art at Ubirr and Burrungkuy. The wetlands are home to saltwater crocodiles and millions of migratory birds. Learn Travel & Transport before you arrive.

Great tour of Kakadu National Park and the surrounding area. Tim was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable about the area, history of Darwin, nature and the surrounding animals, and the rock art.

We had a great day but Viator didn't give hotel pick up options. The Autopia Tour bus does pick up from most hotels which was good when we were able to get dropped off late around 8pm. Our guide Aussie Tim was excellent and made the day fun.

Very good host, Damo (Damien) loads of knowledge and experience which he shared throughout the trip. Saw lots of crocodiles close up to the boat and jumping out of the water. Highly recommend.

Jeff was an amazing guide and provided an informative commentary. Worth the money as we saw crocs, brumbies, buffalo and a variety of bird life. Easy pick up from Cooinda with boat ride comfortable and scenic.

Seeing the landscape from above is the only way to get a true sense of the scale of Kakadu NP and the surrounding country. We visited in the dry season, so the waterfalls in the southern part of the park were not pumping. We did the 30 minute fixed-wing tour, and it was great. We got to see the eucalyptus forests, the stone country, and the wetlands as well as the East Alligator River. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this tour. Our guide Rick was really knowledgeable and kept us engaged the whole day. We all learnt so much about Kakadu with an Aboriginal quide for our cruise leg of the trip. They proved plenty of cold water, snacks, yummy lunch and fruit. The transport was comfortable and air-conditioned!

FAQ

Quick answers

All questions

When is the best time to visit Kakadu National Park?

The dry season from May to October is the best time. The weather is cooler, and most roads and waterfalls are open. Read more about the Best time to visit.

How much is a Kakadu park pass and where can I buy it?

Adult passes are $40 in the dry season and $25 in the tropical summer. Family passes are $100 in the dry season. Buy them online or at the Bowali Visitor Centre. See Tickets & Prices.

Can you do Kakadu in a day from Darwin?

Yes, but you will spend at least 6 hours driving. Day trips focus on the main sealed-road sites like Ubirr and the East Alligator River. Consider small group day tour for a guided option.

Do I need a 4WD to visit Kakadu National Park?

A standard 2WD is fine for sealed roads to Ubirr and Yellow Water. You absolutely need a high-clearance 4WD for unsealed tracks to Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, and Maguk.

Is it safe to swim in Kakadu National Park?

You can only swim in clearly designated plunge pools like Maguk or Gunlom. Never swim in rivers or billabongs due to the high risk of crocodile attacks.

Are there saltwater crocodiles in Kakadu?

Yes. You must assume saltwater crocodiles are present in all waterways. Cahills Crossing and Yellow Water are prime viewing spots.
