Deciding when to go to Kakadu depends on what you want to see. The park changes drastically between the dry season and the tropical summer. You will face different weather, ticket prices, and road conditions depending on the month.

What is it like during the dry season?

The dry season offers the mildest weather and the most open roads.

Between May and October, you can access most of the park. Remote spots like Jim Jim Falls are usually open to high-clearance 4WDs. Wildlife congregates around shrinking water sources. Adult park passes cost $40 from May 15 to October 31.

What happens during the wet season?

Heavy rains close many unsealed roads, but the park turns bright green.

From November to April, Kakadu experiences intense heat and storms. Many dirt roads and remote waterfalls close due to flooding. However, scenic flights offer excellent views of the flooded plains. Adult entry drops to $25 from November 1 to May 14.

How hot does Kakadu get?

Maximum daily temperatures range from 31.6°C in July to 37.6°C in November.

Kakadu is hot all year. July provides the coolest days, making hiking safer. November is the hottest month. Always carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water to prevent heat exhaustion. Nights can be surprisingly cold if you camp in the dry season.

What are the traditional seasons in Kakadu?

The Bininj/Mungguy traditional owners recognize six distinct seasons.

While visitors usually talk about the Wet and the Dry, the local environment shifts through six phases. These traditional seasons dictate plant growth, animal behavior, and cultural activities. You can learn more about this at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre.

Do I need a 4WD in the wet season?

A 4WD will not help if roads are officially closed due to floods.

During the dry season, a standard 2WD reaches main sites like Ubirr. You need a high-clearance 4WD for Jim Jim Falls. In the wet season, rangers close flooded dirt tracks entirely. Always obey road closures and never attempt to cross flooded creeks.

When is the best time to see crocodiles and birds?

The late dry season concentrates wildlife around remaining water.

As water levels drop, animals group together. The Yellow Water Cruise is highly active at sunrise or sunset. You can also visit Cahills Crossing at high tide to see dozens of saltwater crocodiles waiting for fish.
