Kakadu FAQ
Find quick answers regarding park rules, safety, and seasonal access.
When is the best time to visit Kakadu National Park?
The dry season from May to October is the best time. The weather is cooler, and most roads and waterfalls are open. Read more about the Best time to visit.
How much is a Kakadu park pass and where can I buy it?
Adult passes are $40 in the dry season and $25 in the tropical summer. Family passes are $100 in the dry season. Buy them online or at the Bowali Visitor Centre. See Tickets & Prices.
Can you do Kakadu in a day from Darwin?
Yes, but you will spend at least 6 hours driving. Day trips focus on the main sealed-road sites like Ubirr and the East Alligator River. Consider small group day tour for a guided option.
Do I need a 4WD to visit Kakadu National Park?
A standard 2WD is fine for sealed roads to Ubirr and Yellow Water. You absolutely need a high-clearance 4WD for unsealed tracks to Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, and Maguk.
Is it safe to swim in Kakadu National Park?
You can only swim in clearly designated plunge pools like Maguk or Gunlom. Never swim in rivers or billabongs due to the high risk of crocodile attacks.
Are there saltwater crocodiles in Kakadu?
Yes. You must assume saltwater crocodiles are present in all waterways. Cahills Crossing and Yellow Water are prime viewing spots.
How many days do you need to explore Kakadu?
We recommend a minimum of three days. This allows you to visit the northern rock art sites, the central wetlands, and the southern waterfalls.
Where can I see Aboriginal rock art in Kakadu?
The two main galleries are Ubirr and Burrungkuy (Nourlangie). Both feature ancient X-ray art and Dreamtime stories on accessible walking paths.
What is the Kakadu Access Report and where do I find it?
The Access Report is a daily PDF issued by Parks Australia showing which roads and sites are open. You can check it online or at the Bowali Visitor Centre.
Can I camp anywhere in Kakadu National Park?
No. You must camp only in designated campgrounds. Unmarked or improvised camping is strictly prohibited.
Are the waterfalls flowing during the dry season in Kakadu?
Flow rates drop significantly late in the dry season. Jim Jim Falls may shrink to a trickle by September, but the plunge pool remains deep and cold.
What should I pack for a trip to Kakadu?
Pack strong sun protection, sturdy walking shoes, long lightweight clothing, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water. Review our Kakadu Packing List guide.
